Past Laurels vs. Future Success

By Candy Messer

Have you grown too comfortable with were you are at in business? I recently came across this piece of advice from Jennifer Blumin, Founder of Skylight Group:

“Don’t focus only on your business. Keep your ears to the ground and be ready for constant reinvention. No sitting back on your fat laurels.”

This quote reminds me that our past accomplishments, although significant, could be significantly smaller than our future accomplishments but only as long as we are not complacent. We should never forget to celebrate our achievements, properly thank those who helped us, and lend a hand in congratulating and motivating others towards success. However, ‘sitting back on one’s laurels’ – or dwelling too much on your past achievements – prevents one from reaching towards new goals.

Blumin suggests that in order for your business to be successful, we should be ready for “constant reinvention”. This doesn’t mean your business model needs to change every other week, but we should be paying close attention both within and without our businesses and be receptive to improvements. Change is scary—the uncertainty of it is probably the worst part for most people. However, change is necessary in many aspects of life to bring about good results and to move forward. In the world of small business, this is all the more true as we must “roll with the punches” or “duck and dive” to survive and thrive.

Have you had to face constant reinvention of your small business to find success? How did you manage it? We’d love to hear your story!
