On Wednesday February 20, I was part of the committee hosting the 2013 Networking Matters fundraiser networking mixer which raised money for local charities. The two organizations we chose to help this year were the Peninsula Seniors and Toberman Neighborhood Center.
Toberman Neighborhood Center is a non-profit organization that provides social services to low income individuals and families in the harbor area helping them move from poverty to self-sufficiency. Peninsula Seniors offers activities and services to enhance and enrich the lives of senior adults living on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and surrounding areas.
The money donated to Toberman Neighborhood Center is going to be used toward improving the educational levels of the students. Many kids fall behind their grade level without some help, and the dropout rate is 60% in San Pedro and local cities. Toberman’s tutoring helps reduce this rate by getting kids to their reading levels early so children don’t become discouraged and drop out of school. Much of the money donated to the Peninsula Seniors will be used for scholarships given to Masters of Nursing students attending Long Beach State with a focus on Geriatric Care.
Our concept is to host a not your usual business networking event that allows us to help our local community by donating proceeds raised at the event. All net proceeds from corporate sponsorships, as well as ticket and raffle sales are donated to the charities. Corporate sponsors can choose what organization they donate to (many do both), and money raised the night of is split between them evenly.
We had a great turn-out at the event and raised over $11,000 (final number to come once we’ve looked at the all income/expenses)
