As entrepreneurs we often work long hours each day, week, month and year. It’s no different for me. It’s not that I intend to work such long hours, but things always seem to come up that need my attention. And although I have employees who help, it seems like I don’t have enough time in the day to get things done. So when it comes to taking a vacation, it’s often difficult to fit into the schedule. But I decided it was important to take time off to visit some family.
Ten years ago my in-laws moved back to their home town in Alabama. I was able to go visit a couple of times, but then I opened my office and my availability was not as much as before. With an aging grandfather who I wanted to visit as well, I felt I needed to take the time off I had to spend with him so I didn’t have regret that I missed out on one last visit. He passed away last year, and I’m happy I had those chances with him. Now that he’s gone, it is time to head to what my husband calls a “wide spot in the road.”
Each year my husband and kids have gone back for a few weeks to help with larger tasks on the property my in-laws couldn’t manage themselves anymore. With it taking 4-5 days of car travel alone round trip, I couldn’t afford the time off to go with them. This year my daughter is in Zambia so won’t be there, but I’m finally able to visit, albeit by flying in for the week. I’m looking forward to a little R&R that is much needed. I’ll be doing some reading, some fishing, and some logic puzzles. I’ll be helping my mother-in-law with some cooking (although there is no way I can make chicken fried steak anywhere close to how she does it!) And although I’ll have to check in with work periodically, I can honestly say I’m going to try to be as off the clock as possible. I’m sure after this visit I’ll be refreshed and ready to take on many more projects.
Relaxing in a small town with no hustle and bustle is going to be a nice change of pace.
