The due date for most Americans to file their federal return this year is April 18th, 2022. A majority of states have their own income tax reporting requirements and attempt to make their deadline the same as federal. Sometimes due to circumstances within their jurisdictions, there are a few states whose deadlines do not align with the federal due date. The following states have different personal filing deadlines for 2022:
- Delaware: May 2
- Iowa: April 30
- Louisiana: May 15
- Maine: April 19
- Massachusetts: April 19
- Virginia: May 2
It is important to note that some states do not have a state income tax. Currently, there are 8 states with no income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
In past years, the deadline for federal tax returns and most state returns was April 15th. However, for 2022 because Emancipation Day is a recognized holiday and falls on the weekend of April 16th, the holiday will be celebrated on Friday the 15th. With this in mind, the IRS office will be closed on Friday, April 15th making the federal deadline Monday, April 18th.
As you begin gathering documents and start organizing your tax return details for submission, please keep in mind the discussed deadlines so that you are prepared and can file in a timely manner. And if you can’t file on time, be sure to have your tax preparer file an extension. But remember, this is only an extension for the return, not any balance due. Be sure to pay tax liabilities by your business or personal due date.
If you have any questions in regard to your tax filing due dates, be sure to speak with your CPA to find out when you must submit your returns.
