Although our blog is usually on bookkeeping, payroll and sales tax issues, sometimes we want to highlight events happening in the community. I’m writing today to put a spotlight on the efforts of Friends of Torrance Exceptional Athletes (FTEA). This non-profit has taken on the task of building three unique Bocce Courts at Columbia Park in Torrance, CA. These state-of-the-art courts will be designed to better serve South Bay Citizens by allowing the physically disabled/challenged patrons to come join the fun and socialize with others in the community.

At no cost to the city, FTEA calls this a “win-win” initiative. The courts will include features like swinging doors to allow easy access for wheelchairs, scooters and walkers (see a diagram of the courts here:  http://www.friendsoftorrea.org/_pdf/south-bay-bocce-courts-project-brochure.pdf). Not only will courts will provide the physically disabled with a venue to serve their therapeutic/recreational needs, they will also beautify Columbia Park. Torrance mayor Frank Scotto and the City Council are behind the effort, as well as Louis Zamperini (Torrance Hometown Hero and WWII POW) and Kristina Rapatti (wheelchair-bound former LAPD officer, shot in the line of duty), among others.

In order to complete the courts by the end of the year, FTEA will need more donations to help them reach their goal of $50,000.00 (donors will receive a tax deduction for giving back to the community).

Want to help this cause and eat great food at the same time? Just go to California Pizza Kitchen (25036 Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance) on Thursday, October 24 (all day!). Just tell your server you’re there for the Friends of Torrance Exceptional Athletes, and CPK will donate 20% of your check to FTEA’s Bocce courts initiative.
