As many of you may know, I have partnered in the past with Adia to raise funds for local charities.  Since November is Alzheimer’s awareness month, they are currently helping South Bay Senior Services to collect donations of food, supplies, and cash.

South Bay Senior Services, a program of the non-profit 501(c)(3) Behavioral Health Services, Inc. since 1975, is fully committed to their mission of helping seniors in the South Bay maintain independence and quality of life.  Many who seek their services are desperate for help, having nowhere else to turn. Typical clients are in their mid-eighties and have lived longer than they expected to; therefore, their financial resources are failing to keep up with needs in their later years. Very often, these seniors find themselves having to choose between food and prescription medication. Many times during the year, they find themselves without enough money for either.

In the midst of this hardship, here’s how you can help: during the entire month of November, Adia is accepting donations at five drop off locations located throughout the South Bay. Browse through this list and see if you can donate a few items:

Items needed:

  • Soup (ready to eat preferred)
  • Ensure or Boost any flavor (even store brands)
  • Small already prepared meals in cans or small microwaveable containers
  • Snack size fruits and apple sauce*
  • Small cans of vegetables
  • Tuna and/or canned meat
  • Canned beans (kidney, garbanzos, white, lima)
  • Breakfast bars or protein bars (soft or chewy preferred)
  • Breakfast cereals*
  • Juices in small cans*
  • Creamy Peanut butter, Jam or Jelly*
  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Kleenex
  • Lotion
  • Bar soap
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste and/or toothbrushes
  • Shampoo and/or conditioner
  • Small container of laundry soap (powder or liquid)
  • Grocery gift cards**
  • Monetary donations**

*In all food categories, when there is a choice, low sodium and low sugar content is preferred.  No grapefruit please, as it has a negative effect on many medications. Small containers are best for seniors especially since many live alone and appetite decreases with age. Many seniors receiving donated food prefer microwaveable pre-prepared foods because standing to cook can be very difficult for them.

**For monetary or grocery gift card donations, please mail directly to South Bay Senior Services at 15519 Crenshaw Blvd., Gardena, CA 90249, Attn: Director, Bill Larson.  Please make checks payable to South Bay Senior Services.
