If you are a QuickBooks Online user, you may have already had your file upgraded to the Harmony version. If not, you may be seeing it soon.  When you log in, you might see an option to update now if you don’t want to wait for Intuit to do it for you.  The ones who are being upgraded first are those who have integrated solutions such as credit card processing and/or payroll.

One of my customers has been upgraded and I have to say I was a little frustrated at first.  I couldn’t find things easily such as how to reconcile, or find transactions.  But as I’ve worked in the file, I’ve figured out quite a bit more. Unfortunately the upgrade took place during a very busy time when I don’t  want to have to try to find out how to handle different transactions.  I wish the upgrade would not have happened until May at the earliest.

So what is new?  First of all, the tabs are no longer across the top, they run down the left side of the screen.  There are still tabs for customers, vendors and employees, but banking now appears under “transactions”.  The home page has a bar with red, yellow and green alerting you to items needing attention (red is due now or already past due).  There is a quick overview of income/expenses.

One new thing I like that I’ve missed in the online version in the past is recognizing the name of a customer or vendor as I type.  The desktop version would show names with the letters typed, but this never worked for me online (I found it especially frustrating that the online version didn’t recognize my typing the name of a sub account when entering an expense in a check or other type of transaction.  I had to start with the parent account and then scroll down to the sub account.  This will be a much appreciated improvement.

In the long run I think the changes will be helpful, but know that there is a learning curve with the new version.  If you are on online user, work in your file when you have time to spend finding out how to do it correctly.  If you only have a couple of minutes, it may not be the best time to go in as you may end up a bit frustrated.
