Whether you want to connect with a business colleague or a personal friend, relating with people on a personal level generally produces positive results. When it comes to businesses seeking better relationships with their customers, a very similar rule applies, according to surveys by Fulcrum Marketing. The results of the survey boiled down to this: remembering and acknowledging a customer’s special day, especially birthdays, leads to increased loyalty.

Here are some of the survey results:

  • Birthday messages improve morale and loyalty:
    • 74 % of consumers thought more positively of the company after receiving birthday messages
    • Of those, 88% also reported increased brand loyalty
  • Food and beverage industry is most impacted:
    • 92% of birthday wish recipients thought more positively of the company
    • Of those, 96% reported an increase in loyalty
  • Adding discounts or coupons makes the birthday message 24% more effective:
    • Of birthday messages with a discount, 87% of customers thought more positively
    • Of simple birthday wishes without the discount, 70% thought more positively
  • Young people react most positively with increased brand loyalty:
    • 92% of customers aged 25 to 34 reported increased brand loyalty
    • 73% of customers aged 55 and up reported increased brand loyalty

The results are quite convincing. Connecting with customers by remembering their special day is a strong and effective opportunity that retailers will not want to miss. Recognizing a person is a great way to tell someone you care, and branding is a vital aspect of your business that gets better and better with positive morale from customers. Birthday wishes are simple, easy, and effective at both.

I’ve never collected this information from my clients myself, but after reading these statistics, I’m thinking it’s a good thing to do. What do you think?
