Are you an entrepreneur operating a business? Are you aware that you will have a business
license that most likely needs to be filed in the next month or two in order to operate in compliance? This also applies if you’re working from a home-based business. Cities expect that businesses will file the licenses and permits required to operate within their city. And this is different than the DBA, which is known as “Doing Business As” which is through your County. I’ve had people come to me before not realizing that they need to have both a DBA, if they are a sole proprietorship or partnership operating under a business name different than their own name and are not an entity, as well as operating in the cities that they have with the proper licenses and permits. It’s important to be in compliance because failing to do this can result in penalties and fines. The fees can be calculated on different things. And again, it’s based on the city requirements. I’ve seen them requiring calculations based on your gross receipts. I’ve seen it based on payroll, and I’ve also seen it on the number of employees that are on payroll at the time the license is due. Be sure to check your city in which you’re operating to find out the due dates and requirements for filing.
