Small and mid-sized businesses are quickly adopting technology to drive growth and improve efficiency. Accessible tools such as artificial intelligence and social media platforms are helping companies expand their reach and streamline operations, according to Verizon’s latest State of Small Business Survey, which gathered responses from 600 U.S. businesses.

Social media plays a significant role, with 58% of businesses now on TikTok. At the same time, 38% are using AI to support marketing, communications, customer service, and cybersecurity. These shifts reflect how businesses are adapting to stay competitive in a digital-first economy.

“Small business owners are entering a new chapter of digital business with the rise of AI,” said Aparna Khurjekar, Chief Revenue Officer at Verizon Business.
The survey also found:
47% of organizations adopted new technology in the past year to enhance digital security.

28% use AI for marketing and social media, and 24% for writing tasks.

Over half believe AI can help offset reduced staffing or support retention.

52% say growth increases the risk of cyberattacks; 47% invested in stronger cybersecurity tools.

Social media remains a key outreach tool. Facebook is the most widely used platform, and 76% of businesses report positive results from their online presence.

As digital tools continue to evolve, small businesses are embracing innovation to grow, connect with customers, and protect what they’ve built.
