Wow, this year is really flying by!  I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe it’s already April.  Where did the time go?  In our industry, we are always busy this time of year, so it is to be expected that we’d have a lot of work to do.  Not only do we have the “regular” work we do throughout the year (payroll, monthly bokkeeping for clients, etc.), but we also have the new clients coming in to our office with work that needs to be “caught up.”  In the last week, I’ve had 3 new clients come in with work to be done prior to 2012, and two that needed to get 2012 completed.  So all of this work keeps us busy and feeling like time is flying by.  We want to get the work done as soon as possible so our clients can get their tax returns filed by the April 15th deadline.  Now that we are two weeks out from that filing deadline, that most likely won’t happen.  Even if we were to get everything done in the next day or two, the CPAs most likely have way more tax returns to file than they have time remaining before the filing deadline.  Therefore, the extension for filing the tax return comes into play.

Many people ask me if I look forward to the April 15th deadline so work will drop back down to a “normal” level.  What I explain is that I don’t actually do income tax returns in my office, so that is not our actual deadline.  In my office, we process quarterly payroll and sales tax returns, so our deadline is actually April 30th (two weeks longer than what people think.)  We hope to have all bookkeeping completed in March for clients who need to file their taxes by the April 15th tax deadline so the CPAs have time to review the information and file the returns.  By the end of March, we are looking to start the payroll reporting.  By the time we have finished those reports (usually the second week of the month), we can start the sales tax returns since the final bookkeeping information (bank/credit card statements) are available to complete the sales calculations needed to file the returns.

So all that to say, we’ve been extremely busy in the office making sure all our client work is up to date.  The time seems to have flown by since so many hours have been spent working.  I am looking forward to the end of April and the chance to spend some more time with my friends and family.  I know they’ll be looking forward to me having a bit more time with them in the next few months.  Being so busy during the first 4 months of the year is to be expected, and the feeling that the time has flown is actually a pretty good thing I think.  Can’t wait for May and the chance to celebrate with my staff that we made it through another busy season!

Of course, if you haven’t filed your taxes yet and need help with the bookkeeping, we are here to help.  Our staff is always in the office between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday.  We look forward to seeing how we can assist you!
