A survey by CareerBuilder found that most employed adults (52%) are happy with their jobs and are not actively looking for a new one. However, a significant percentage of Gen Z (23%), Millennials (24%), and Gen X (14%) are currently searching for new job opportunities. The survey also asked employees about the factors that keep them engaged and loyal to their organization.

The results showed that, on average, a quarter of employed adults have been with their current company for three to five years. Nine percent have been working there for less than a year, 22% for one to two years, and 20% for six to 10 years. The data suggests that loyalty and positive work culture are important to workers.

According to the survey, 56% of employed adults are most attracted to their current job because of the work schedule. This aspect is particularly important to women (61%) compared to men (51%). Other appealing factors include colleagues (48%), fair pay (46%), work-life balance (43%), and health benefits (34%). For Gen Z, having good relationships with colleagues is a major draw (58%), while men (52%) are more likely than women (39%) to value fair pay.

The survey also revealed additional benefits that employees desire beyond common work perks and their company’s current offerings. These include a four-day work week (30%), having their birthday off (28%), mental health and wellness benefits (24%), full-time remote work (21%), paid sabbatical leave (16%), pet insurance (13%), and fertility or new baby benefits (10%).

Interestingly, perks related to work schedules are more important to employees than financial offerings such as signing bonuses (28%), student loan repayment (20%), childcare or daycare stipends (19%), and tuition reimbursement (15%).

So what does all of this information mean? If you want to retain staff (or attract employees), there are a variety of reasons they want a position. It’s not all about the compensation. Ask your staff what is important to them, and if possible, allow them to have what they desire. In the end, you’ll have content workers satisfied with what they have been offered and not look for it elsewhere.
