Usually we discuss payroll and bookkeeping concerns for small businesses, but today I wanted to share about opportunities for all of us to make a real difference in a way that helps your business as well.
I think we probably all can agree that volunteering time to help people is a good thing to do. But what stops us? Well, most likely the issue is time. If you’re anything like me, you put so much time into your business, employees, family, and other activities that there seems to be no time left for anything, let alone more work. So, growing your business and helping a cause seem like mutually exclusive efforts.
But what if you could do both at once?
If done right, there are many ways to drum up support for a cause while assisting your marketing efforts at the same time. Also, supporting a cause sends a positive message to your customers that you are the type of business that actually cares about the community and is willing to put in the effort to show it. Here are a few tips for those who are able and want to make a difference.
1. Find your passion.
Look for an opportunity that plays to your business’ and/or your employee’s capabilities, strengths and passions. I just discovered a great website that allows you to search hundreds of volunteer sites (in your area) by searching categories, strengths, causes, and/or keywords: http://www.volunteermatch.org/. There are also so many great resources and opportunities out there; let us know if you find other great matches! Try to stay away from controversial causes—you don’t want to lose customers by choosing one side of the fence.
2. Get the Word Out
Whether by announcing your effort in local newspapers, in your newsletter, flyers, radio, or television, getting the word out will do several things. Not only will you be getting your business’ name out there, you’ll also be drawing attention to the cause or organization you’re supporting. Depending on the nature of your event, you may also be able to drum up additional support or sponsors for the cause. This can also be an opportunity to offer promotions for your company for those who participate in the cause/event you chose, which is a win-win for both you and your partnering organization.
3. On Your Mark, Get Set….. Go!
Good luck in your endeavor! There are so many ways you can contribute. Some causes can be supported virtually, some require time or physical labor, and others can be aided by a simple monetary donation. Be sure to do your research on the organization and ask around before you commit. If you plan to participate in an event, you might consider giving your employees an incentive to join you. Charitable giving may also qualify you for a tax credit, so keep your receipts. Lastly, don’t forget to keep a positive attitude—you are trying to help after all—and be willing to adapt as the winds change.
