If you rely on IRS forms, assistance, or tax information in a language other than English, those services may soon change. The Treasury Department is reviewing whether to reduce or eliminate multilingual options, which could impact how you access tax resources in the future.

The proposal follows a recent executive order designating English as the official national language and guidance directing federal agencies to phase out multilingual offerings and focus on English-language learning programs.

Presently, the IRS offers a wide range of support for non-English-speaking taxpayers. You can access basic tax information in 20 languages, request about 100 forms in Spanish and other languages, and use free translation services over the phone or in person.

The IRS also maintains Spanish-language social media accounts, and by filing Schedule LEP, you can request to receive written communications in your preferred language.

Nothing is final yet, but changes are possible. If these services are reduced, understanding your tax obligations could become more challenging if English is not your first language.

Staying informed now will help you prepare. If you have questions or need help understanding your IRS options, be sure to reach out to your tax preparer for guidance.
